چکیده

Living matter offers many examples of what appears to be action exerted at a distance. I am not attempting to renew the discussion of the classical problem of physics because the action at a distance which I have in mind is not exerted through vacuous space but through matter, and its peculiarity lies in the fact that the intervening matter seems to act in a purely passive way. The example which has been present in my mind for more decades than I feel happy in contemplating is furnished by the neuro-muscular system. The muscle fibres are controlled by the nervous system with respect to three things: (1) those contractions which move the several parts of the body, (2) their elastic properties which maintain the several parts of the body in their normal posture and (3) the production of heat by the muscles of warm blooded animals in which the skeletal muscles are the chief thermogenic tissues. Of these the second is commonly called by physiologists muscular tone. The agent, the middle man that is, between a particular cell in the central nervous system and the group of muscle fibres which it controls, is a delicate fibril no more than say 4t~ in diameter which consists mainly of protein, and which is enclosed in an insulating sheath of fat ty matter. The way this agent acts in controlling the contraction of the muscle fibres is well known. Waves of short length, called nervous impulses, pass down the fibril to discharge some of the stored energy of the muscle fibres, the muscle fibre being an internal combustion engine. Each nervous impulse viewed in one aspect is a wave of molecular displacement involving chemical change, and in another aspect a wave of electrical displacement. The mode of action of the nerve fibre, however, in the other two cases is, so far as I am aware, completely unknown. It is of course possible that muscular tone and 641

The relationship of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and total dietary antioxidant intake with metabolic biomarkers in the elderly living in Tehran city

Background: Exposure to particulate air pollutants is one of the major problems and crises in Tehran metropolis, Iran. Various studies have shown the effect of particulate matter of air contaminants as an increase in cardiovascular and oxidative stress. So, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of <2.5 micrometers and <10 micrometers microns particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM1...

Dissection of molecular assembly dynamics by tracking orientation and position of single molecules in live cells.

Regulation of order, such as orientation and conformation, drives the function of most molecular assemblies in living cells but remains difficult to measure accurately through space and time. We built an instantaneous fluorescence polarization microscope, which simultaneously images position and orientation of fluorophores in living cells with single-molecule sensitivity and a time resolution o...

Magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of human brain in vivo and its molecular underpinnings

Frequency shift of gradient-echo MRI provides valuable information for assessing brain tissues. Recent studies suggest that the frequency and susceptibility contrast depend on white matter fiber orientation. However, the molecular underpinning of the orientation dependence is unclear. In this study, we investigated the orientation dependence of susceptibility of human brain in vivo and mouse br...

A Possible Mechanism for Evading Temperature Quantum Decoherence in Living Matter by Feshbach Resonance

A new possible scenario for the origin of the molecular collective behaviour associated with the emergence of living matter is presented. We propose that the transition from a non-living to a living cell could be mapped to a quantum transition to a coherent entanglement of condensates, like in a multigap BCS superconductor. Here the decoherence-evading qualities at high temperature are based on...

Living matter—nexus of physics and biology in the 21st century

Cells are made up of complex assemblies of cytoskeletal proteins that facilitate force transmission from the molecular to cellular scale to regulate cell shape and force generation. The "living matter" formed by the cytoskeleton facilitates versatile and robust behaviors of cells, including their migration, adhesion, division, and morphology, that ultimately determine tissue architecture and me...
